Bob Akers

Freeman of the Village

The Parish Council would like to pay tribute to Bob Akers who recently passed away.

Bob was a much loved and well-respected member of our community and during his lifetime he was very active as part of, among many things, the cricket team, football team, horticultural society, senior citizens club, summer fete and the Parish Council, serving for 55 years, including many years as Chairman. Councillors who sat with him were very grateful for his knowledge and experience which he generously shared with them.

So much so that when he finally stood down from the Council they unanimously voted to make him a Freeman of the Village, only the fourth person to be given this honour. Unfortunately this didn’t come with a large rusty old key, or the right to graze sheep on the village green. However it did come with a scroll, illustrated for him by the schoolchildren of the village, acknowledging his many contributions.

We will miss seeing him around the village, on his allotment, and especially on Remembrance Sunday when, for many years, he would proudly lay a wreath at the War Memorial on behalf of the Parish.

Thank you Bob for all you did for the village.  You will always be fondly remembered.
